Updated Link for PTSA Spring Teacher Appreciation Donations

Sent on behalf of the CVHS PTSA:

Every spring, the administration of Centreville High School seeks to celebrate the wonderful 300 staff members with a lunch during the National Teacher Appreciation month of May.  This year the school is hoping to provide a taco bar from Mo’s Southwest Grill to the teachers.  Since we didn’t have the spring mulch sale this year (which we hope to retrieve next year), the budget is tight.  Please consider giving a donation of $10 or more to show the Centreville staff that they are appreciated and click on the UPDATED link provided below to make your payment.  Any questions can be directed to Alison Machmer at [email protected].  Thank you!

From young to old, there will be something for everyone! Audience members will have the option to get their faces painted, get henna tattoos and even dance to some swingin’ jazz tunes! A new highlight this year will be music from the movies - movie clips will play while the bands perform the soundtracks to Harry Potter, How to Train Your Dragon and Star Wars! The event brings together members of the whole CVHS performing arts department, as it features band, orchestra, choir and theatre students in performance! Special thanks to the Art Club and the Muslim Student Association at CVHS for providing extra support. 500 folding chairs will be available for guests to sit on but guests are also encouraged to bring picnic blankets and camping chairs. C'ville School News 04-19-2024   3rd Quarter Report Cards

Report cards and attendance reports will be mailed the week of 4/22.  You should be receiving your students report card by the end of next week.  Please encourage your students to make the most of their 4th quarter and work to make improvements where needed.  Thank you!

Attendance Update

As you know, we have been focused on improving attendance as a goal this year.  Our goal is to stay under 15% chronic absenteeism rate.  We are currently at 18% as of 4/18, so we have improvements to make.  Every absence matters!  The attendance rate has been getting higher as we’ve entered into the 4th quarter.  Please ensure that students are attending every day, arriving on time, and they stay focused at the end of the school year.  If students have appointments, it is better to attend part of the day than missing the whole day.  Students can also “earn back” attendance hours by staying after school with their teachers.  Please encourage them to stay after school on late bus days with a teacher where they need extra help.  Thank you!

New Director of Student Activities Named

Our current Director of Student Activities, Mr. Sanabria, is retiring on Jul 31, 2024 after 30 years of amazing service at CVHS.  We wish him well, and we want to share exciting news that Mr. Mike Parker has been selected as our new Director of Student Activities beginning Aug 1, 2024.  Mr. Parker has been an assistant principal at CVHS since 2017.  He has also served as an assistant principal and director of student services at Mt. View HS and Thoreau MS.  Mr. Parker is dedicated to the Centreville community as an educator, coach, parent, and resident.  He looks forward to continuing to strengthen the athletic, activities, arts, and all extracurricular programs for our students here at CVHS, and he is excited to make this transition.  Please join us in congratulating Mr. Parker.

C'ville School News 04-05-2024 Total Solar Eclipse on April 8

A solar eclipse is happening on Monday, April 8, 2024. It's a rare and exciting astronomical phenomenon and one that requires important safety reminders. Looking directly at the sun, even during an eclipse, can permanently damage your eyes. We are asking teachers to keep students in class until dismissal.  We are not providing protective eyewear to all students.  If students bring their own eyewear, they will be able to view after dismissal.

Here's what you need to know:

  • Don't look at the sun without approved eyewear. This applies to students and staff, and we encourage you to reinforce this at home.
  • Regular sunglasses are not good enough. The NASA website has more information about eye safety.
  • Eclipse timing: The eclipse starts around 2:04 p.m., peaks at 3:20 p.m. (which coincides with dismissal for some students), and ends around 4:32 p.m. Please remind your child to be especially vigilant about eye safety during dismissal. If you have concerns about your child walking or riding the bus home, please arrange for alternative transportation.

For more details, visit the FCPS Solar Eclipse webpage.

The COVID-19 isolation period of five days is no longer recommended

New respiratory virus guidance applies to respiratory viral illnesses, including COVID-19, influenza, and respiratory syncytial virus (RSV). CVHS Wildcat Achievements Peace Award Recipient for CVHS “Level the Field” Group

The Student Peace Awards of Fairfax County began in 2006 as a way to encourage people to think more about peace as both a means and an end, and to recognize young people who work as peacemakers. Every year, the high schools in Fairfax County are asked to select one junior or senior, or a group of students, whose work has promoted peace. The project is organized by volunteers and funded by donations from 17 secular and religious sponsoring organizations.Students from 26 Fairfax County public schools have been named recipients of the 2024 Student Peace Awards of Fairfax County, designed to recognize young people who work as peacemakers.

Level the Field, Centreville High School, proudly received this 2024 recipient.   Level the Field empowers underserved students with encouragement, tutoring, and mentoring by peers and older students. Level the Field has made contacts in Iraq, Canada, and Mexico. Through the organization’s Better Together Mentorship program, Level the Field matches middle and high school youth to college students to talk about challenges with schoolwork, stresses in relationships, or self-esteem.

Level the Field’s Reach for the Stars program is a free tutoring program targeted toward low-income elementary school students who want to explore their interests in English, computer science or math. Taken together, these programs help students overcome psychological and socioeconomic obstacles that hurt their academic success and their life chances.

FCPS Prom Dress Shop Opens at CVHS for 2024 With Hundreds of Dresses

Fairfax, Virginia, April 2, 2024- Fairfax County Public School (FCPS) marketing students from Centreville High School and the Fair Oaks Classroom on the Mall program will open their Prom Dress Shop once again for the prom season.  The shop will open on Friday, April 6th at Centreville High School in Clifton, Virginia.

In 2006, Centreville High School and Fair Oaks Classroom on the Mall students partnered together to collect dresses as a way to combine their interests in fashion with community service.  The dress shop has helped hundreds of financially challenged students attend prom in style each spring by providing prom dresses and accessories at no cost to students.

The marketing students apply the retail marketing and visual merchandising skills learned throughout the school year to transform their classroom into the Prom Dress Shop.  “This is an excellent opportunity to accomplish several goals at once,” said Miranda Schick, Centreville High School and Classroom on the Mall Marketing Teacher.  “First, students apply learned marketing lessons to a real-world retail environment.  Second, they support the School Board’s goals of helping students succeed beyond the classroom through their ‘Portrait of a Graduate’. This includes communication, collaboration, critical thinking, and global citizenship skills.”

The Prom Dress Shop is located in the modular classroom building, near the stadium, in the student parking lot of Centreville High School, outside of door 12.  Any area student, not just those from Fairfax County Public Schools, who do not have the funds to purchase a prom dress may choose from hundreds of new dresses donated by Macy’s.  They must show a valid student ID, or other form of school identification, to select a free dress during the following store hours:

Friday, April 6th                 5:00pm-8:00pm

Saturday, April 7th             2:00pm-5:00pm

Sunday, April 8th               1:00pm-4:00pm

Friday, April 12th               5:00pm-8:00pm

Saturday, April 13th           2:00pm-5:00pm

These topics include how the principal demonstrates/impacts instructional leadership, school climate, management, communication and community relations, culturally responsive and equitable leadership, and professionalism within the school.

The questionnaire will be administered between March 18 and April 5. When you receive an email from FCPS Surveys, please take a few minutes to complete the questionnaire. Your feedback matters! Thank you!

Upcoming Performing Arts Concerts

The Music Department will be performing for their State Assessments over the course of the next week.  Assessments are the most important academic event of the year for the department and showcase our ensembles at their finest.

Wish the CVHS Choir under the direction of Susie Kraft luck in her first Assessment at C’ville!

Both the CVHS Band and Orchestra are chairing Assessments for thousands of music students across our district.  Melissa Hall has gone to great lengths to host Band Assessments at GMU to alleviate the strain on the school of holding the event at CVHS and provide students with the opportunity to perform on a professional stage.  Mark Taylor and Meredith Kohut are piloting a new program where judges travel from school to school instead of transporting 30 orchestras to CVHS for the three-day event.

Performances are open to the public.

FCPS Family Engagement Survey This Sun., 3/3

Parents/caregivers will receive the FCPS’ Family Engagement Survey Sunday, March 3, from independent research firm K12 Insight. Please participate — your feedback is critical in helping to inform and improve practices to best support our students. Taking this survey will also help strengthen the partnership between your family and our school. When that partnership is strong, students can experience a range of benefits including improved school readiness, higher student achievement, better social skills and behavior, and an increased likelihood of graduating high school. The survey will take about 10-15 minutes to complete and will be available in 10 languages. Please visit the Family Engagement Survey webpage for more information. Your voice matters!

Eating Disorder Parent Information

In 2013, Virginia passed a law requiring every school system to provide information to parents annually about eating disorders with parents/guardians of students in the fifth through twelfth grades.

According to the National Eating Disorders Association (NEDA 2023),

Eating disorders are serious but treatable mental and physical illnesses that can affect people of all genders, ages, races, religions, ethnicities, sexual orientations, body shapes, and weights. In the United States, 28.8 million Americans will suffer from an eating disorder at some point in their lives.

There is no single cause of an eating disorder. Rather, it is a complex combination of biological, psychological, and sociocultural factors that converge and set off an individual’s predisposed genetic vulnerability.

In collaboration with the Fairfax County Health Department, FCPS has developed a web page with detailed information and resources about eating disorders.  To find out more, please visit the FCPS Eating Disorders website.

In addition to the information on the FCPS website, the National Eating Disorders Association has a toll free, confidential Helpline, 1-800-931-2237.
