Report cards and attendance reports are being mailed home - look for them by the end of the week.  They are also available in ParentVue and StudentVUE.

CVHS “Signs of Suicide” SOS Presentations

All middle and high schools in FCPS teach students about mental health and how to seek help if they are worried about themselves or a friend. All schools use an evidence-based program called Signs of Suicide (SOS). The program teaches students about this difficult topic and encourages them to seek help.

This is a reminder that the SOS lessons will take place through history classes during the upcoming weeks of:

November 18th - 9th Grade

December 2nd -  11th Grade

We encourage you to visit www.sossignsofsuicide.org/parent for information on warning signs for youth suicide, useful resources, and some of the key messages students will learn. You can also view this parent video  or visit this site to learn more about how you can continue this important conversation at home.

If you did not complete an opt out previously, and would still like to do so, you can opt your child out of this lesson by emailing Kristin Girardin, Director of Student Services at [email protected].

Federal Impact Aid Survey Now Open

FCPS is asking all families to fill out a Federal Impact Aid Survey. The form is available online in SIS ParentVUE. If you have not already filled out the form online, we will be sending paper forms home on Monday, November 18th. If the enrolling parent has already completed the Impact Aid form through Parent VUE, there will be no paper form for that student. Please return paper forms no later than Friday, November 22nd.

Completing this form for each school-aged child in every household is important, because information from this survey resulted in more than $4 million in funding last year from the U.S. Department of Education. These funds are used to support all Fairfax County public schools and centers.

Please watch this video and visit the Federal Impact Aid Survey page for more information.

Spotlight on the Arts!

Students in the Performing Arts Dept are representing C’ville proudly this fall!

The CVHS Orchestra Department presented their Fall Concert on October 9 with a packed house! It was a great first concert of the school year. On October 23 we hosted our 3rd annual Trunks, Tricks and Treats for the entire Centreville pyramid. There was a spooky side-by-side performance with the Liberty MS String Ensemble, an instrument petting zoo for our youngest future string students sponsored by Day Violins LLC, tips & tricks in the library, face painting brought to you by the CVHS Theater dept and last but not least, 16 decked out cars for our Trunk or Treat in the bus loop. Fun was had by all! This weekend Orchestra represented C’ville with three (3) students making All-Regionals and coming up in January, seven (7) making All-Districts.  Our All-Regional students are eligible to audition for All-VA in the spring.  Please join us for our Winter Concert on Wednesday, December 11 at 7pm in the Auditorium. The Vivace Orchestra will World Premiere a C’Ville student’s composition.

The CVHS Choral Department proudly presented their Fall 2024 Pyramid Concert on November 6 in the CVHS gym! This concert featured 638 singers from the entire Centreville pyramid - CVHS, Liberty MS, Bull Run ES, Centre Ridge ES, Centreville ES, Colin Powell ES, and Union Mill ES. This wonderful event truly brings the community together, and all choirs sang beautifully! Soon after, 25 talented CVHS singers auditioned for District XI Honors Chorus on November 9 at Fairfax High School. Results will be announced soon, and those who make it will participate in the 2.5-day District XI Honors Chorus event at West Springfield HS in February. Next up is our Winter Choral Concert on Thursday, December 19 at 7pm in the Auditorium. Please join us as we kick off winter break!

The Wildcat Marching Band earned a unanimous Superior rating at VBODA Marching Band Assessment on 10/26/24 at Liberty High School in Bealeton, VA. The highlight of the day was the comment from a judge, “you are a JOY to watch perform!” Congratulations to all of the student musicians who brought the show, Come Rain or Come Shine, to life, and for their incredible work and commitment to musical excellence. A special thank you to the dedicated band parents who helped support everyone throughout the season with assistance on props, uniforms, equipment, food and so much more!

Please join the Wildcat Bands on Thursday, December 5th at 7PM in the Skip Maiden Auditorium for their Winter Concert. This performance will feature all of the concert bands, as well as small chamber music performances from select students. We hope to see you there!

Save the date for Bandemonium! Wildcat Band Under the Stars. This one-of-a-kind music festival event will take place on May 16, 2025 at 6:30PM in the CVHS Bus Loop. More details to come!

    Red Bag Day, November 9th

Centreville High School is proud to announce that we have partnered with Food For Neighbors (FFN) to help feed our local students who deal with food insecurity because even in a county as wealthy as Fairfax, one in four kids in our area are struggling with hunger.  Studies show that when adolescents are fed positive outcomes include increased enrollment in challenging courses, higher graduation rate, improved mental and physical health, a decrease in disruptive behaviors and increased participation in after-school activities".

Food For Neighbors is a local organization addressing this problem by collecting food from our community via their Red Bag Program and donating directly to our local schools. The food is then distributed to the students every week through our food pantry.

On November 9th CVHS will be hosting a Red bag event. This means we need volunteers to help collect, sort and organize food. Not only is this a great opportunity for students to receive volunteer hours but for staff to see the process of how our food pantry is run and be part of a wonderful cause. Below is the signup sheet to be considered a volunteer in the Red Bag event. Please be sure to sign up by close of business 11/1/24.

CVHS Home Football Game Updates and Expectations

We are excited about the start of the football season with our first home game of the season taking place this Friday, Sept 6th. It is always exciting to see students and the community show that Wildcat spirit!  We also want to make sure everyone is safe.  Please see the important updates and reminders below. Thank you for helping to ensure that we have a safe and positive sports environment at CVHS!  Go Wildcats!

Game Expectations
  • Always represent CVHS in a positive sportsmanlike manner.
  • No student backpacks or bags are allowed into the stadium, including handbags.
  • No students under 9th grade will be permitted without their parent or guardian.
  • CVHS students and fans must remain on the home side bleachers.
  • Cheering must be positive in nature.  No foul language, negatively calling out specific players or numbers, and avoid yelling at the referees and coaches.
  • No re-entry.  If you leave, you may not re-enter without paying.
  • Students must depart school grounds quickly after the game.  Do not hang out.  Make sure your ride is ready to pick you up.
  • Students must be dropped and picked up at Door 1, which is located at the flag poles in the bus loop. Student will not be permitted to be dropped off or picked up from the stadium.
  • Any safety concerns or inappropriate behavior that occurs during the game should be reported quickly to a school official or FCPS police officer.
Student Game Drop Off and Pick Up

CVHS Food Bank

GovDelivery2 months 2 weeks ago

Centreville High School is proud to partner with Food For Neighbors (FFN) to help feed our local students who deal with food insecurity because even in a county as wealthy as Fairfax, one in four kids in our area are struggling with hunger.

Food For Neighbors is a local organization addressing this problem by collecting food from our community via their Red Bag Program and donating directly to our local schools. The food is then distributed to the students every week through our food pantry.

“A child’s chance for a bright tomorrow starts with getting enough food to eat today” (Feeding America, 2021). We hope you will participate in the Red Bag food collection program. You can make a difference in a local student’s life by simply adding a few extra items to your shopping cart every 2 months.

Here’s how it works:

  1. Request a reusable Red Bag here and Food For Neighbors will drop it off at your house.
  2. Fill the Red Bag with food items that are listed on a tag on that bag.
  3. Respond to the FFN text survey regarding your availability to leave out a filled Red Bag.
  4. Put the Red Bag outside your front door in the morning on the next bag collection day, which is Saturday, September 14th. (Collection dates are also listed on the tag.) And don’t worry, they send reminders.
  5. Your Red Bag will be picked up from your house, the food sorted at a local school and delivered directly to our school food pantry.

With your help, even more kids can be fed. For more information on the Red Bag program click here. Check out what items FFN collects as they are targeted to ready-made, individually packaged food items that students and teens can eat on-the-go or with little preparation.

Other service opportunities include Driving to pick up filled Red Bags and Sorting the donated food during the Red Bag Day events. Visit the Get Involved page to find out more and to sign up to volunteer in these 2 very important roles. This is a meaningful way for students to get service hours, too.

If you have any questions, please feel free to contact Ana Alvarez [email protected] (Family Liaison), Robin Thiel-Williamson [email protected] (ESOL Department Chair), Carolina Diaz [email protected] (School Social Worker), or Karen Joseph [email protected] (FFN Executive Director).

Thanks for helping us provide food to students who need that extra support!

Senior Parent Meeting

There will be a meeting for parents of seniors at 6:00pm in the auditorium preceding Back to School Night on Wed, Aug 28.  Students may also attend the meeting if they wish.  The meeting will primarily focus on tips for the College Application process: student deadlines, application portals, official transcript requests, recommendations needed, etc.

Seniors: This post-secondary program will be presented to you during ROAR on Tuesday, August 27.

Upcoming Underclass Portraits - 9/11 & 9/12

Underclass portraits will be taken during PE class for 9th & 10th grade students and English class for 11th grade students.  More info to come.

Attendance

Improving attendance continues to be a major goal at CVHS this year! We finished the 2023-2024 with a 17% chronic absenteeism rate, which is a 6% improvement from the previous year.  Our goal is to remain under 15%.

Attendance and punctuality are critical to student success in the classroom, and absences add up over the course of the year.  Being present in school for all classes is of utmost importance, unless the student is sick or out for another excused reason.

Students should be in school by 8:00am with the first class starting promptly at 8:10.  Traffic is heavy on school mornings, and students must plan ahead for the extra time.

Please seek to avoid vacations during school days when possible. Time is set aside during the school year for travel including winter break, spring break, and several student holidays scattered throughout the year.

CVHS attendance expectations and reporting procedures can be found on our school website here.

Cell Phone Use

In alignment with FCPS Student Rights & Responsibilities (SR&R), Students are not permitted to use their cell phones during class time.  Phones must be away.  Phones or headphones are not allowed to be used during instructional time.  Teachers are using cell phone holders to collect phones at the beginning of class.

See the CVHS Cell Phone Policy on the school website.

Please help us reinforce with students that their phones need to be away during class so they can focus on learning.

Grading Updates

CVHS has made a few adjustments to our grading policy to align with recent FCPS grading policy changes.  Be sure to review the CVHS grading information here on the school website.

Bathroom Safety

Occasional bathroom breaks are necessary during the school day; however, prolonged periods of loitering in areas with limited supervision, especially in groups, can have negative consequences for both the individual student and the overall school community. The bathrooms, being private areas, are unfortunately more susceptible to inappropriate activities.  Security and administrators will routinely monitor the bathrooms to the extent possible.  We request your support and cooperation in encouraging responsible behavior and reinforcing appropriate bathroom usage habits.  We also ask that students notify a staff member immediately if they witness any dangerous bathroom behavior.

Lunch & Food Deliveries

Students are not allowed to leave campus during lunch, eat in their cars, or order food from a delivery service during school hours.  If a student forgot their lunch, parents or guardians can bring lunch and drop it off in the main office. Students may also purchase lunch in the cafeteria.  When ordering food, students will often have a delivery driver come to an entrance other than Door 1, which compromises the safety of the entire school. Our office staff does not have the time to accept and manage food deliveries and will not open the doors for Uber Eats, GrubHub or any other service.

Return to School Forms

Please be sure you have filled out all required and optional forms for the 2024-2025 school year https://centrevillehs.fcps.edu/return-to-school-forms

CVHS Kiss & Ride

Wildcat Families,

Please be prepared for heavy traffic on Union Mill Road as school begins next week.  The volume of traffic increases significantly between 7:45am - 8:15am with the opening of school.  We want everyone to be safe!  Please leave early and plan for extra time.  Be patient and drive slowly and carefully in the school zone.

The Kiss & Ride map can be seen below and on the school website here.  Do not enter the bus loop for kiss & ride.  Please note there are two locations where students can be dropped in the morning with one near the main entrance circling around the faculty lot, and one in the back of the school at Door 9.  Please see the red arrows below.
